McCallum, Hubert G. - U.S. Navy

Hubert G. McCallum, BM2c, was born 27 Nov 1920, his parents were Charles Sr and Mary (Torgramsen).  He married Dorothy Gilbert.

Hubert joined the U.S. Navy, 15 Dec 1942, he was stationed on the US Fox DD-234 in the North and South Pacific.  He experienced days of shelling near Attu, Alaska. His ship took him to the South Pacific Tinnian Island, where he captained a POW sampan fishing for tuna.  Ship officers found it humorous when he asked for shore leave in Alaska coastal towns from Unalaska to Ketchikan, stating he wished to visit with relatives. Hubert was discharged in 1945.

He was a lifelong commerical fisherman, the owner and captain of fishing vessels, Carol M and Patricia Ann.   Hubert was a story teller, he was well-versed in the history of the Shumagin Islands and its surrounding areas.
